DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The U.S. Department of Labor's August 2012 jobs report shows slowing job growth and a falling unemployment rate. The economy added 96,000 jobs in August, which is down from 141,000 jobs added in July, and the unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent in August, down from 8.3 percent in July.

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Tropical Storm Isaac is tracking toward the Gulf Coast, an area devastated by Hurricane Katrina seven years ago this week.

Eliot Jennings, an instructor in the Emergency Administration and Disaster Planning degree program and director of UNT's Emergency Operations Center Lab, which trains students how to respond to emergencies, can comment on the preparations that officials and residents should undertake as the storm nears land.

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Scott Belshaw, assistant professor of criminal justice at the University of North Texas, and Rex Wright, professor of psychology at UNT, are available to comment on today’s (Friday, Aug. 24) shooting near the Empire State Building, in which multiple people were wounded.

Belshaw will discuss copycat crimes, psychological aspects of offenders and gun-related issues.

On Aug. 23 (Thursday) Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney unveiled his plan for North America to be energy independent by 2020. He said that he would wean the U.S. off imported oil and spark an economic boom by opening up more federal land to oil and gas drilling, providing states with more power to approve drilling permits and building pipelines and partnerships with Canada and Mexico to take more advantage of those nations' oil resources.

For the 13th year in a row, shoppers in Texas will not pay local sales taxes on most items of clothing and footwear priced under $100 during the state's annual sales tax holiday, which will be Aug. 17-19 (Friday-Sunday) this year. For the third year in a row, shoppers also will have a sales tax break on most school supplies under $100 that are purchased during the weekend.
