The executive chef and general manager of Zeppole Coastal Italian Restaurant, one of several restaurants at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, will instruct UNT students who are preparing for careers as managers and executives in the hospitality industry during Guest Chef Day Nov. 5 at UNT’s The Club at Gateway Center.

UNT's Archives and Rare Books presents the “The Resource Center LGBT Collection: 50 Years of LGBT History in Dallas." Items from this collection will be on display for the first time in an exhibit at Archives and Rare Books, Room 437 of UNT’s Willis Library.

UNT journalism student Jason Yang and two other students spent nine days talking to and observing a Mexican woodcrafter to tell his story for the Heart of Mexico Literary and Visual Storytelling Project. Offered this past summer by UNT’s Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism, the study abroad trip’s goal was to take students out of familiar environments and provide them with the same challenges they could someday face as foreign correspondents, freelance writers or photojournalists.

UNT students, faculty, staff members and others will hear a firsthand account of the 1973 Yom Kippur War in Israel and learn about religion as a part of everyday Israeli life and government during two lectures sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program in October and November.

The Hunger Games Learning Community is designed for freshmen who have not chosen their majors. The community consists of several core curriculum courses, which are required for all students earning bachelor’s degrees, with the courses organized around the theme of food and hunger. For the fall 2013 semester, the community includes History 2610: U.S. History to 1865; Sociology 1510: Introduction to Sociology and UGST 1000: First Year Seminar.

UNT's Fall Visiting Writers Series, which is sponsored by Creative Writing in the Department of English, will start with a reading and book signing by author Matt Bell on Oct. 1 (Tuesday). The series will also include poet Alan Michael Parker and author Poe Ballantine. The authors will offer question-and-answer sessions for students prior to their readings.

Four UNT College of Information students were selected as 2013 Spectrum Scholars by the American Library Association. UNT is one of only three Texas universities to have students selected as scholars, and has more scholars than the other Texas universities.

UNT's Multicultural Center and Media Library will present a free screening of “Raid of the Rainbow Lounge,” a 2012 documentary of the raid, on Oct. 3. Moderate discussion will follow the film.

UNT's Global Digital Retailing Research Center in the College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism presents the Executive + Scholar Lecture Series. The inaugural event in the Executive + Scholar Lecture Series will have the president of TAL Apparel Ltd., which has garment factories and offices in seven nations; and representatives from the internationally recognized sustainable retailer Patagonia and the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.
