University of North Texas officials will break ground at 1 p.m. Jan. 24 (Tuesday) on a new four-story, 128,354-square-foot addition for the College of Visual Arts and Design, bringing many of its programs together in one place.

A new exhibition at UNT ArtSpace Dallas will feature photographs of a woman who shopped at Neiman-Marcus and kept turtles for pets. Shiny Ghost, running from Feb. 4 (Saturday) to April 29 (Saturday), features pictures taken by University of North Texas alumna and adjunct professor Rachel Cox.

A new exhibition will highlight the works of retiring University of North Texas associate professor Jerry Austin in ceramics – a field that he likes for the challenges of the medium. Currents: A Survey of Recent Works will run from Feb. 8 (Wednesday) to March 4 (Friday) at UNT on the Square. The reception will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 9 (Thursday).

An exhibition opening Jan. 23 at UNT on the Square will feature thought-provoking pieces about Fort Worth artist Christopher Blay’s reaction to police violence against African-American men in which a fictional character time travels to try to produce a different outcome.

Just in time for the much anticipated release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the University of North Texas College of Music Wind Ensemble is paying tribute to John Williams, composer of the franchise’s soundtracks. The event, which also will feature music from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Superman and other well-known Williams compositions, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 (Thursday) in Margot and Bill Winspear Performance Hall in the Murchison Performing Arts Center, 2100 Interstate 35E, Denton.

Sanderia Faye, University of North Texas Ph.D. student in English, has won the nation’s top honor for a debut novel by an African American writer – the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation 2016 Legacy Award.
